UCD and AHEAD

CASE STUDY: Transforming Higher Education Content Through Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

A Video Production Partnership between Jump Films, University College Dublin (UCD), and AHEAD

Project Overview

  • Client: University College Dublin Access & Lifelong Learning (UCD ALL) & AHEAD

  • Project Type: eLearning Video Production & Post-Production Animation

  • Objective: Produce a comprehensive suite of educational, conversational, and animated testimonial videos to refresh and power UCD’s online UDL course.

  • Key Achievements: Successful multi-phase production, flexible budget adaptation, and long-term asset maintenance.

The Challenge & The Solution

  • The Challenge

UCD and AHEAD needed to produce 19 high-quality, engaging videos within a defined budget. The content spanned multi-person dynamic student discussions, formal academic “talking head” interviews, and complex “doodle-style” animations. Navigating scheduling across a bustling university campus and internal studio environments required flawless logistics.

    The Jump Films Solution

Jump Films acted as an agile production partner, offering:

    • Scope Optimization: Dynamically scaled crew and studio days down while scaling up editing and animation assets to perfectly balance UCD’s budgetary constraints with their creative goals.

    • Phased Production Strategy: Separated the project into distinct, manageable phases to seamlessly accommodate university timetables and student availability.

    • Full-Service Infrastructure: Provided complete administrative compliance (insurance, tax clearance, procurement setup) alongside technical execution (Director, Camera, Sound, Hair/Makeup, and Studio Space).

Production Timeline & Execution

Jump Films structured the delivery across two distinct production environments to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to the university.

Phase 1: On-Campus Filming (UCD Lochlann Quinn School of Business)

  • Focus: Student Perspective & Conversational Films.

  • Execution: Captured 5 rapid-fire student discussion videos (5 students, 3 questions each) and 2 conversational introduction videos within a tight, high-pressure 5-hour window.

Phase 2: Studio Filming & Advanced Editing

  • Focus: Academic Interviews & Custom Graphics.

  • Execution: Hosted 2 days of filming at Jump Films’ dedicated studio for 9 interview-to-camera segments.

  • Post-Production: Engineered 9 custom “doodle-style” animations to overlay onto the interview footage, translating complex pedagogical concepts into engaging, digestible visuals.

Long-Term Partnership & Asset Support

The value of a production partner is proven long after the main cameras stop rolling. In August 2025, UCD re-engaged Jump Films to update an existing asset (“Geraldine’s video”) to reflect new academic findings.

Agile Asset Management: Jump Films quickly unarchived the project, sourced and licensed new stock animations, and completely re-engineered a core scene to expand a 6-step framework into a new 7-step model (“Support the Process”). The revised asset was quality-tested and delivered seamlessly within days.

The Outcome

  • Through collaborative scope adjustments and careful logistical planning, Jump Films delivered a premium, accessible library of educational videos that elevated UCD’s eLearning platform. The relationship has evolved from a single video tender into a trusted, ongoing partnership for asset maintenance and high-impact digital storytelling.
